CHAPTER TEN

Carl Lyons didn’t have any official military service on public record like Blancanales and his PI pal, not that it mattered to him. A former Los Angeles detective and now a Stony Man warrior, he had seen more than his share of combat and dead bodies, not to mention firing shots in anger more times than he could count. As leader of Able Team he often mapped out tactics and strategy—seeking counsel, of course, with his two comrades and the Stony Man team—and he was grimly aware that almost without exception, when the bullets started flying and men were bleeding out all over the place, battle plans went straight to hell.

This time was no exception.

Hard truth be told, there were too many unknown variables to weigh beyond fleeting consideration, not without getting brain lock, careless or reckless when he jumped into the shooting gallery. Start with Parker, untested as far as he was concerned, not a clue as to how the private dick would hold up under fire, what his combat moves, or if he would even follow orders, all of which was a recipe for potential disaster. Then there was no clear fix on enemy numbers, positions, opposition hardware. Problem number three was cops, innocent bystanders, security detail to factor into the murderous equation. Their Justice Department credentials may well prove as worthless as cheap cracker box tin, if the law started getting ground up in the battle zone, especially with the kind of hardware they were lugging into the casino. With the exception of Parker, they were webbed and harnessed to boot, the three of them weighted down with grenades, spare clips beneath their knee-length, black nylon windbreakers, commando daggers, big and sharp enough to filet a white shark, in shin sheathes, just in case all else failed. There was the war van, parked several blocks away, meaning if the enemy here, by chance, made the street or a getaway vehicle rolled up…

Why piss and moan, he decided, over what he couldn’t change. They were late for the bloody horror show as it stood, judging the utter bedlam that consumed Fremont and the surrounding streets, screams of terror flaying his ears, sirens wailing in the distance, cops sure to be bulling up their six anytime. Leading the charge into the stampeding herd of terror-crazed civilians, his M-16/M-203 combo clearing a narrow path as runners spotted then veered sharply from the weapon, he heard the blistering retorts of gunfire, the muffled crunch of what he suspected was a grenade blast somewhere in the building, beyond the casino’s front doors.

There was no way, he knew, to play it other than a charge straight up Broadway.

No sweat, they’d all been to Hell and back before.

Schwarz on his left wing, wielding a match for his M-16/M-203 squad pulverizer, Blancanales and friend picking up the rear, Lyons hit the door, surged into the pandemonium. One sniff of the air and Lyons caught a noseful of cordite, blood, loosed bowels and bladders. It
